1.6T Owners Who Installed a Catch Can in PCV Hose

If you have a Catch Can on your 1.6T engine: How much oil are you having to drain each time - and at how many miles?

On my Forte GT 1.6T I get this much in ~300 miles:

The reason I am asking is that it might be that Kia included an oil separator system in the K5 1.6T engine:

I put an ADD W1 catch can on the PCV line, the day i brought her home. So far I've only put 490 miles on the car, but i just checked the catch can, and it's bone dry. However i'm still doing the engine break in procedures and haven't had the RPMs above 4000 yet. I'll check again at 1000 miles and see if i collect anything.

I was wondering the same about the one circled on the right in the picture being an OEM air oil separator. I've had VWs in the past and they have had OEM air oil separators that look exactly like the one pictured above. But in doing some research online to figure out what that part would be on the Smartstream 1.6t, I've come up empty. I've tried looking up replacement parts for the engine to see if i could find a parts break down of the valve cover and it's components, but no luck. Maybe it's too new of an engine to have an extensive parts list available online yet.

This is what the VW OEM air oil separator looks like.

Thanks for the reply/info.

I've had discussions with other owners who have installed catch cans and they are reporting the same thing - very little to no oil in the cans. Because of this I really do think those odd round-shaped items on the valve covers, on both the 1.6T and 2.5T engines, are oil separators for the PCV system.

My Forte GT w/1.6T does not have these odd round-shaped devices and the catch can is collecting oil regularly.

The Forte and the K5 1.6 engines are not the same engine.

Just completed my first oil change at 1000 miles. Checked my catch can and it was still bone dry.

Good to hear! These new-designed engines appear to have solved the GDI-intake valve carbon problem...I hope! :)
