Can't believe I missed this is for the Sorento!!! - See post 12 below

Not sure if this has been posted before. Just happened to run across a youtube install video for the new K&N intake for the K5 GT w 2.5T engine:

I know someone's going to say something about under-hood heat - remember, the intake air from the filter is further heated by the turbocharger and then cooled by the intercooler.

Not sure if you've mentioned this or not, but how has your gas milage changed with the intake?

I am very happy with the MPG. I have not been driving aggressively - actually purposely driving to get the best MPG and the car is doing very well! I do like to "shoot" part-throttle (not WOT) off the line to get to the speed limit quickly and then set the cruise.

I haven't gauged the miles versus gallons of gas yet, but the in-dash MPG consistently shows 30+ MPG in mixed driving.

If you want to install the K&N intake (designed for the Sorento 2.5T) you'll have to cut the heat shield as follows:

The K&N tube is a direct fit - all the hose connections are THE SAME. the heat shield fits in the K5 (remember, the tube and filter box replaced by the K&N intake are the exact same part numbers between the K5 and Sorento 2.5T engines). The Sorento engine compartment is deeper - hence K&N made the heat shield taller to fit the Sorento engine compartment. You'll have to remove a small bit of plastic from the battery tray - or you could notch the tray to fit around the plastic:

In addition, when reinstalling the intake tube (from Radiator support) you'll want to put some foam rubber on the tube where it rests against the Turbo-to-intercooler pipe.

Truth is K&N won't approve what I've done as they want to test everything.

I have had no problems at all.

DISCLAIMER: If you do install the K&N intake for the Sorento - YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK! I won't accept responsibility and neither will K&N.

So, how's it so far?
Unless I open the throttle a lot to hear it I don't even know it's there.

The factory filter and filter box is restrictive, K&N says it gives the Sorento 2.5T 16 more horsepower, and I feel performance is better at WOT. My tires agree - they whine a lot more...:)
Finished cutting the heat shield so that it clears the hood insulation pad. Sure wish K&N would make an intake for the K5 GT!

It sounds good when you get on it. When the RCV opens (AKA BOV) you can definitely hear the SSSSHHHHH...:)
do you think it's ok to drive it around with out the heat shield?

I did not have any problems driving my K5 when I just had the intake tube attached without the heat shield in place. I prefer the heat shield though.

I have also seen pictures of people who installed their own made-up intake with just a tube and filter.

So, I understand K&N still don't have an intake made specifically for the 2.5L K5 GT ... You still need to order one for a Sorento and butcher the airbox to make it fit the K5 GT ?

yes, sadly, it's either k and n and you have to modify heat shield, or wait for the sxth intake which is on back order and not that big, planning on buying and installing k and n within the next 2 months personally, both intakes are the same price

The drop in panel filter at $80 seems a little high for what it is so that's unfortunate as well.
