Cars.com released a list of 6 pros and 3 cons that they've found on the K5.

What does everyone think about their list? The most interesting thing for me is their comparison of the 8-inch and 10.25-inch infotainment screens.

Things We Like

1. Power Packed Into a Small Engine
The K5 has a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder under the hood, putting out an impressive 180 horsepower and 195 pounds-feet of torque — a lot of power and torque in a little package.

2. Automatic Transmission
Though the eight-speed automatic transmission itself has some quirks, it’s still an automatic. A lot of the K5’s competitors are working with continuously variable automatics, which aren’t a popular choice among our staff when it comes to drivability.

3. Standard Multimedia
The standard 8-inch touchscreen works with volume and tuning knobs as well as mechanical buttons, which mirror the mechanical buttons, switches and knobs used throughout the K5. The more physical controls make for easy use, especially while driving. This multimedia system also supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, standard.

4. Comfortable Ride
The K5 isn’t trying to knock your socks off, but it does offer a pretty comfortable drive — not so much road feel that it seems too sporty, but just the right amount.

5. A Welcome Brake
Again: We like that the K5 doesn’t have something. This time, it’s by-wire brakes, which are increasingly common. Instead, the vacuum-boosted brakes in the K5 have a good pedal feel. Input seems pretty equal to output, and it’s easy to modify the level braking power.

6. Roomy Cabin
It’s a mid-level interior for a mid-level car. The materials are nice, though no leather upholstery option is offered. The seats are comfortable and highly adjustable, including the passenger seat, which has a standard height adjustment. The backseat also has good head- and legroom.

Things We Don’t

1. Laggy Acceleration
Step on the gas to get more power while you’re already in motion, and it’ll take the K5 a second to do what you need it to do. The problem is that the transmission downshifts before the car accelerates, causing a lag. Sport and Smart driving modes can help this hesitation, but they’ll also hurt in terms of gas mileage.

2. Optional Multimedia
Where the standard 8-inch touchscreen functions well, the optional 10.25-inch touchscreen system is a different story: There’s no tuning knob, and the buttons are capacitive rather than mechanical — plus, the system only works with the wired version of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This could be justified by more screen real estate, but because screens are measured diagonally, this one gets away with being longer and thinner: 9.5 inches by 3.6 inches compared to the standard screen’s 7 inches by 4 inches. Also, Android Auto only takes up two-thirds of this screen rather than being edge-to-edge like on the standard version.

3. Active Sound Design
Active Sound Design augments the engine sound coming through the stereo, which will make your K5 sound rather sporty. However, you’re supposed to be able to change this sound via selectable settings … but every setting sounds the same. Kia says the differences are most noticeable when driving under a heavy load and high rpm, which isn’t how most people drive a sedan.

If i held the gloss black area where the controls are and shook it, it made the squeak sound. Have not tried again. I will say tho today it sounded different today. It was more of a deeper sound, not so squeakish anymore. Car barely reached 100 miles today after getting it on 10/2, it has mostly been in garage and a few drives here and there. Had it out in hot sun yesterday as I was organizing garage and a few hours today before I drove it, not sure if the heat and 90 degree temps here in LA had anything to do with that.

Pros: compliments! Passenger in car next to me complimented color! (wolf gray) and someone else asked if that was the Kia Spider 😂 I said no but I assume he was referring to the stinger lol

A new con: In android auto whether spotify or google music, when I try to skip song with steering wheel controls it just starts the song over! I have to press next on the screen for it to switch to next song.

I noticed this with carplay. Down on the steering wheel control skips forward, up backward. Weird

My first con I have encountered is a squeaky sound while driving. It seems to be coming from the A/C control area. If i am at a standstill and try to shake that area I can replicate the sound
There is a tech service that might fix this: Issue "SA436 K5 Console Squeak Noise" that the service department will see (along with others) if they enter your vin number.

The dumbest feature (actually lack of feature) is on my K5 with premium package. There is no button to fold the mirrors in when you are going to a car wash. You have to get out and do it manually. Less expensive k5 models have this feature.

I have a GT line as well and the squeaking coming from the console area makes me want to drive it off a cliff. The dealership says they have had other complaints too, but don't offer any hope of a fix at this point.

I had posted the following in a different thread. After my dealer telling me there weren't any tech bulletins pertaining to my problem (SA433-Wide navigation problem) I went to a different dealer that actually took the time to look at the bulletins pertaining to my car and these popped up, all of which had been there since the car was built (July 2020). SA-436 might solve your problem.

Here they are: SA 431 - Hood release cable and others SA432 - Fuel line inspection and adjust SA433 - AVN 5-Wide navigation sw update SA436 - Console Squeak Noise SA441 - A/C discharge hose and sun visor clip

This has almost gotten me t-boned a couple times while crossing a busy highway. I step on the gas and the car sits there for at least a second before it moves. This is an intermittent problem and of course when I take it to the dealer it works fine.

Is this behavior present in all of the driving modes?

I have experienced what I'd consider "turbo lag" which sounds similar to your experiences. It only happens from a standing start... while in motion punching the gas pedal is always responsive for me. Using Sport mode, it is even more responsive and the lag from a stop is minimized or eliminated... but I prefer to drive in Normal mode.

I've tried all the modes and it happens in all of them. I had read somewhere that Sport mode fixed it, but in my case it doesn't. I'm pretty sure this is a common problem and I'm surprised there isn't a recall or at least dealer knowledge of it. I know the parts manager at me dealer heard me talking about it and he said he has a K5 also and in Sport mode his is even worse. This is dangerous to the point that if Kia can't fix it I'm going to have to get rid of my K5. I don't want to die.

Just wondering, are you talking about how it cuts power when you step on the gas too hard? I've heard about that happening because of the aggressive traction control and is especially noticeable with the FWD models. The AWD models mitigate most of that by distributing some of the power to the back wheels.

This issue is mostly apparent when slow turning and stepping on the gas.
