Good morning,

I've had my K5 for 2 days now. I typically leave my phone in the Wireless charger spot while i'm driving. I'm noticing that it isn't charging very well and that my phone is getting HOT, like almost to hot to hold, hot. I know there are vents there are supposed to have a fan blowing air on it, i'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong or if it might just be faulty. Also, my phone fits in there fine, but it only seems to register that it is in there and charging for like 2 minutes then it shuts off.

Any help or comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

I noticed the hot phone charging as well (Galaxy S20+).. It does charge though, eventually.

In related tidbit, there is an indicator on the dash (and chime) that tells you if you forgot to remove your phone from the charger. Nice touch, Kia.

Are you using an iPhone? If so the “optimized battery charging” setting may be enabled. You can disable the setting by going into settings-battery-battery health.

I have a Note9 and notice that it barely charges. It can add power to the power used to run the bluetooth and stream to the radio from Sirius/Pandora/Spotify. So it's a useless feature apparently. As long as wireless Android Auto works, I'm good. I like to play music off a flash drive and I can charge off the power outlet adapter that I used in my previous car.

So glad I finally found others with this issue. The combination of the wireless charger and wireless Android Auto is part of what pushed me over the edge into buying this car. I'm REALLY upset that the wireless charger is basically useless. I hope they fix this somehow.

Wireless charger works fairly well for me. It's not hyper fast insta charge but it's about per norm of a wireless charger. If you have a case its gonna charge slower. Especially if you have a case that's not designed for wireless charging (unicorn beetle makes great cases that are wireless charging compatible). And your phone and case heating up is also pretty normal for a wireless charger. You have to consider you're running electricity through the physical case of your phone. It's going to heat up.

So, I would agree with everything you're saying, except that I use a wireless charger overnight and it never stops charging and gets hot like it does in the car. I might consider getting a more officially "compatible" case for wireless charging, or I'll try charging without the case for a while first. But, I have a feeling it's still going to have the same issue. I'm noticing that the charger works fine (and as you're describing) for a little while. But, I did about a three hour trip this weekend and at some point into the trip, the charge drops before even getting to 100%. I think the setup of the wireless charger being enclosed and not well ventilated is the real issue. Poor design. Oh well.

I gotcha I haven't gonna for a trip much more than 45 min which is probably why I havent experienced that. The lack of ventilation in that area is like you said probably the main cause, I imagine they didn't consider long road trips and tailored their design for more typical daily driving.
And for 20 bucks you can't beat a unicorn beetle case. I've had one on every phone I've had for the past 4 years. They're awesome.
