1 of many problems

Hey guys, I have a 2021 K5 and have had it a little over a year. I've had many problems in that time. This is 1 that just started yesterday. My drive mode changes by itself when I'm going down the road. I'll get to a stop and change it back (I use the smart mode 90% of the time) and then start driving and all the sudden, it flips and goes to a different mode. I checked to make sure I have nothing touching the dial that changes it, which I don't. Has anyone else gone thru this? This car is really making me want to trade it in. My last 4 cars were either Hyundai or Kia's and I've never had a problem AT ALL with any of the previous ones. Also, has anybody noticed how often you have to change your key fob battery???? I literally have to change mine every other month!!! Ridiculous!

Just out of curiosity, which trim level do you have? I hear the keyfob battery issue has been mostly been affected by owners of the EX trim with the Premium Package. We're unsure of what's causing it so someone with the issue will have to look into it further.

As for the drive mode changing... I know that in SMART mode, it'll dynamically change between ECO and Normal, but that's usually indicated by the color of the SMART logo and stays in that mode. I also know that if you leave the car in Sport mode and turn it off, it'll switch back into Normal mode upon restart.

In short, it shouldn't be changing modes while you are driving. Is the drive mode dial loose by any chance? (The dial should twist left and right, but spring back to the middle position when you take your hand off of it.) Also, which mode does it switch itself into? What other issues have you experienced with the car prior to this issue?

I've got the LXS. And I usually drive in smart mode. It has never just switched by itself until 2 days ago. I was literally driving down the road and it switched to sport. Then a few seconds later, it switched to normal. I thought I might have bumped the switch because I like to put my phone by the dial, but my phone was nowhere near it. Then today, I was sitting in the parking lot and it just started switching between modes. Nothing by the dial. I tried to take a video and of course, wouldn't do it again. But to my knowledge, the dial isn't loose or anything. It bounces back just fine. Shortly after I got the car, all my lights on the dash would come on like a previous post I seen here and they asked if I had been in an accident. Then after I told them no, they asked if I'd had the windshield replaced. Again, no. They replaced the trim on the windhsield and so far it hasn't done it again. Then i was having trouble opening my gas door. I attribute that to possibly being frozen (im in michigan) so whatever. Now Im having problems with the drive mode. Im beginning to not like this car!!

The gas door could be a solenoid issue that others had experienced before. I'm not sure why it is but it's been happening to cars manufactured after about March of last year. It seems to be sporadic at best so it's not affecting every K5 owner. The issue is covered by Kia's warranty so the dealer should be able to replace the solenoid at no cost. Whether that issue would be totally fixed is kind of unknown. It could also be attributed to the harsh cold and salty conditions that you usually get up there as well.

If you haven't already, I would also bring up the drive mode issue with the dealer. There might be some kind of a short causing the drive mode to change by itself. My main thought would be something to do with the drive mode controller module where the dial is located, but I won't rule out other causes.

I've had my 2022 GT since last Sep and had to have both fob batteries changed. Kia Service said it's normal, but I've never had a car that required such frequent fob battery changes. Parts dept. switched them out and tested the signal strength against a meter and said the fobs sometimes have to be reprogrammed to the car. If these new batteries don't last, I'll look into the reprogramming service. IMO, batteries should not be dying that quickly.

It really shouldn't. I've had mine going since I got my car over a year ago and it's still going strong.

It has to be either the car is constantly syncing with the keyfob when it is in proximity or the keyfob itself is constantly seeking the car. For instance, if a button is constantly depressed and stuck in that position for a long while.

I doubt any of the side buttons are stuck but perhaps the remote start button might be, especially it being sunk in like that all the time.

I usually keep my keys by the back door, do you think being that close to the car could be doing something??

I'm still on the original battery and my car is just shy of a year old. If you've replaced the battery 5-6 times, I'd definitely complain. Hell, once or twice would be pretty crazy. FOB batteries have always lasted me at least 2 years if not more.

Has anyone had the door make a loud boom and the door pops open while driving.
(As if there was pressure building up in the cabin.)
it happen to me I felt as the dealership did not believe me.
i feel unsafe in this vehicle now,
I have not even made my first pmt.

I experience something kind of similar back in November just after turning onto a gravel road.
It was just a normal section without any big dips, ruts or bumps and around 40-50 km/h my drivers door became unlatched partially.
My dash made a ding noise and showed the door ajar icon in the display. It didn’t fully open on its own as I had to pull the handle to open it and re-close it correctly.

It hasn’t happened since that one time and I’m not 100% sure if it was fully closed or not, but I drove for about 25 minutes prior to the incident without issue or any warnings. Nothing about pressure or a loud pop in my experience, but the door partially opened on it own.
I generally drive with my doors locked so maybe that’s what kept it from opening further.

I have never heard of this issue before... Is the door literally opening at speed??? That sounds like a major safety issue. One thing I would check is see if the latch mechanism for the door is loose. It shouldn't be moving and on the door tight so if it moves even slightly then I would bring that up to the dealer. That should be something that is fixable under warranty.

Kinda random question but has anyone been experiencing water on the door kickplate things? The black things that have K5 written on them when you open the doors? Seems the front passenger has it the most, I'll have to take some pictures and post them.

Other than stray drops from the top after opening the door or from my shoes, it's been fine for me. Water is usually on the ledge below the kick plate area, though.

Maybe check the rubber seals on the door itself to see if there are any gaps or holes that the water is somehow getting through. The seal on the body side should be alright if there isn't any water coming into the cabin itself.
