Lock the K5 WITHOUT the Smart Key

I've owned my 2021 K5 EX for a year, and only now am I discovering that I cannot lock the car without the key fob. This is the first vehicle (of many) that I've owned where I couldn't do this. To restate: I cannot just open the door, hit the lock button on the door, and close the door. For my K5, that will NOT lock the car. This makes no sense at all. I should be able to lock my car whenever I want. Help!

I can't say I ever noticed. You are saying if you hit the lock button on the inside of the car and close the door it does not lock? I know it won't lock if it detects the fob inside the car, but I would have assumed if you don't have the fob locking the door and closing it would work. I know you can't lock it from the outside by pressing the button without the fob.

I just checked, if I’m IN the car, running or not, with the door closed, I can press the button to lock it. But, if the door is open, I can’t lock it via the manual button. I press it, but it doesn’t lock. So, when exiting the car, I just have a new habit where I reach in my pocket and lock via fob.

I’ve had mine almost a year, but the salesperson made a point to tell me I have to use the fob or the app to lock it. Guess I’ll never lock the fob in the car?

Folks, apparently I did not make myself clear in my original post; I apologize for that. Here is the exact situation. My car was in my driveway about 40 feet from my house door. I stood in the doorway and used the fob to unlock the car, and then set the fob down in the house. I walked to the car, opened the door, took out an item I needed, then tried to lock the door by hitting the button on the inside of the door. It would not lock. I tried it numerous times. In fact, the locking mechanism didn't even make a sound. I hit the unlock button numerous times (even though the door was already unlocked) and it made a little "thump" sound each time. So, as I said in my very first sentence, I CANNOT lock the car without the key fob. I believe that anyone should be able to lock a car without a key fob, and any assistance this community can offer will be GREATLY appreciated. Jim

I tried it out the other night and it's the same for me. It doesn't bother me as I usually end up grabbing my key and tapping the lock doors button once inside but I can understand the annoyance when being used to other cars that had the door lock buttons just work even without the key present.

Sometimes, I would just like to unlock all of my doors without the keyfob by just pressing the lock/unlock doors switch on the inside of the driver side door.

It would especially be handy whenever I dry my car after a wash to get to the door jambs. It gets uncomfortable having to pocket the keys or have the keys on your person just to unlock once and put it back in the garage so it doesn't get wet. I rather not test how water resistant the keyfob is.

In just the last few months I have encountered this problem many times. And it is such a pain.
Also you can't lock the doors with the car running. Well, I can't lock my car with it running if I get out.
When you hand the keys off to open you home or anything and you are still inside the car you have to go back and get the keys and lock it. Never have I ever had this problem with anything. Why don't the lock button just lock the doors? Rant over.....

My 2023 GT does the same thing - cannot lock the car using the door's inside lock button while the door is open. As I'm getting out of the car I like to lock the car using this button - key is in my pocket (and it still does this if the key is in the house) - that way there is no "beep" when I lock the doors.

Yes, I know the key fob will lock the door and I can use the outside handle button to lock it...

ALL the Kias I've owned prior you could lock the doors this way - my 2021 Forte GT can be locked this way.
